Plumbing Fixtures

There are a number of signs that part of your plumbing system might soon need to be replaced. First, consider the fixtures in your home. For the most part, a well–made plumbing fixture should last for decades. Unless it is made with cheap materials or poorly maintained, a bath tub or toilet shouldn’t break. However, there are some instances when the condition has little to do with the need for replacement.

Sinks

Sinks are another common replacement. Old sinks are lower, shallower and oftentimes experience damage due to heavy use. If your sink is chipped, stained or simply doesn’t fit the motif of the bathroom or kitchen in which it is being used, it may be time to have a new one installed.

Toilets

For example, you might decide that you want to install a low flow toilet as a replacement for the standard 3.5gpf (gallons per flush) toilet you currently have. You’ll save nearly 2 gallons per flush, which amounts to more than 22,000 gallons of water per year. The water savings are immense – sometimes reducing your water bill by as much as 20%.

Pipes & Fittings

While fixtures are the most common replacement in a plumbing system items that are replaced, remember that pipes are not designed to last forever either. Especially if you live in an old home with iron pipes, corrosion and heavy use will slowly wear them down and eventually result in a need for replacement.

Repiping your home is a major project that most homeowners choose to do in sections when possible. If you have separate kitchens and bathrooms especially, it might be best to only do one or two rooms at a time. However, keep in mind that when only some pipes are replaced, the same problems you experienced before might persist. Slow drainage and poor water pressure can be systemic and will only stop when the entire system is repiped.

Modern piping is done with copper, a metal that corrodes less and leaves behind fewer residues as it ages. You should also consider having your pipes and fittings inspected if your home was built before the 1970s. Lead fittings and solder was often used in older homes’ plumbing. If there is any lead in your plumbing system, you want to have it replaced as soon as possible.
